ONARES
CH Technologies' Oro-Nasal and Respiratory Exposure Systems (ONARES) seek to dose/expose and, thus, deliver chemical substances to one or more animals via the respiratory tract. This can be considered to include the oro-pharynx and the nasal mucosa.
Highly soluble gases like sulfur dioxide and hydrogen chloride are almost quantitatively removed by the nasal mucosa. Other substances, such as nicotine in the form of an aerosol, may be removed to a degree by the oral mucosa. Rodents, being obligate nose breathers, have the ability to remove water soluble gaseous substances and large particle aerosols before they reach the respiratory and peripheral airways and, thus, display systemic absorption for such materials. Through the use of small particle delivery, increases in respiratory dosing can be achieved.
The ONARES family of devices includes exposure systems for single animal, two to five animal, and tiered modular (stackable) systems for 12, 16, and 18 test subjects. While rats and mice are most often the subjects of ONARES applications, the ONARES technologies for restraint and compound delivery of a size selected aerosol, gas, or a dust/powder can be applied to ferrets, rabbits, or even primates.
Through the use of minimized breathing zone volumes, rapid delivery, and removal from the common breathing zone, respiratory delivery can be maximized by ONARES systems for enhanced systemic action.
NEW for 2017! Improved design that utilizes a seated oring in the connector cone for a better seal.
